Peoria IL, 1967 or so, photographer unknown, via the Peoria Public Library Local History Collection.
I grew up in East Peoria, which you can see across the river in this photo. About a year ago I started searching for images of the old CILCO power plant (the building on the upper right, which was imploded in 1995) and was surprised by how little seemed to be available. Too bad, because it was a nice building—certainly nicer than the Wal-Mart that replaced it. In fact, finding older photos of any of Peoria’s industrial sites and architecture is a challenge—there’s bits and pieces here and there, but generally it seems like Peoria was never thoroughly photographed—or if it has, much of it hasn’t been posted online yet.
Sometimes I think about going back to Peoria and just photographing the shit out of the place for some big pretentious photo project thing. The likelihood of that actually happening is small, but I do think about it, sometimes.
